Self employmentMore and more people with learning disabilities are starting to look at self employment and small business ownership as way to get a job.
It is important to link you skills and interests to a community need or opportunity and to think carefully about the business idea. It helps to get the right support from people who know about starting a business and wherever possible to talk to someone who has run a similar business to your idea. You will need to think about finances and tax but these are not really as complicated as they sound and there are many guides available. More supported employment agencies are able to support people to think about self employment. There has been a few projects looking supporting people to explore self employment. The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities developed some guides about self employment to help with business planning. These can be accessed through our partners, Mutually Inclusive Partnerships - click here - where you can also find information about their enterprise workshops |
